radio article keywords(the following are minutes from discussion.)
pathos. John Oliver uses it too. important to have logos too. I, Robot. pathos can drive decisions too. media bias. Is media bias acceptable. Bias is necessary to understand perspective. TV news media should be factual, but radio is more personalized and can be more biased. Good time to be in journalism because it is changing so much: it used to be that you had to give equal weight to both sides and now the journalist is supposed to have an opinion; it's their responsibility. It is healthy to be exposed to different opinions; it helps critical thinking. Individuals think their own opinions are important (fb generation). Limbaugh's audience = 72% male, 90% white; does it have an impact? CEOs are mostly male, white, and over 50, and they have a lot of power/influence. He has power but he does not influence my friends e.g. It has a subtle power over our generation, not sure why. Rush's feminist jokes, people find funny, so that could perpetuate toxic ideas. The fact that this commentary still exists says something. "entertainment through hate." homecoming comedian at Emory: hateful jokes, repeated a joke no one laughed at, people gave him pity chuckles. Rush et al. bully people by calling them weak and soft: obvious rhetorical technique: take away the person's legitimacy. Does it work? e.g. "Obama is not half the man Sarah Palin is." How do you defend yourself against being "soft"? It's up to the audience. Character attacks (ad hominem) that are not legitimized. (tautology) |
